This summer I worked at the best summer camp in the world! Camp Wakonda is a small Adventist summer camp in central Wisconsin. I worked as a water ski instructor and boys councilor. My favorite two weeks at camp were the last two weeks. Family camp.
For the last two weeks of summer camp I only did water skiing and various jobs around the camp. My favorite part of family camp was watching the Dads. That may sound like a weird statement but hear me out. Most of the families at camp are families with kids in the middle school age. This means the fathers are usually in their mid-forties. These guys cracked me up!
Over the course of a week it seemed that most of the dads decided to try and turn back time and do things that they had done as teenagers and young men. It was really fun to watch. As a water skiiing instructor I got a front row seat to this. "I use to ski quite a bit, I guess I'll try it again. Hahahaha! The thing was, was that they weren't half bad. They were actually really good. With their wives and kids watching they attempted to turn back time. When they were skiing, trying not to smile so as to look cool, they did indeed go back in time.
When I'm a dad, taking my family to family camp, I hope to be the same way. In my too-short swimming shorts, with more hair on my body then on my head, and with a bum back I'll impress my wife and embarrass my kids! I can't wait!
