Recently I watched a video on Youtube of Ira Glass, host of "This American Life", giving tips on how to tell stories better. In the section called "Good Taste" he mentioned an especially interesting bit. I'm going to paraphrase what he said
"If your getting into something creative like TV or radio (or blogging) its because you have good taste. You know what is good and you want to produce something great. Eventually you'll hit a gap in your work. You will get to a place where your work is not that good. Your taste is still good but your work is crappy. At this point most people quit. I want to say with all my heart that if you stick with it and get through this stage you'll get to the point where you are producing the material that you envisioned. But you have to get through all the terrible material first. Produce a lot of work. Set a deadline so that you get stuff out each week. The more stuff you get out the sooner your desired material will come."
I think that is so true. Before a person can get the results they want they have to persevere. When I began to jog a few years ago I hated it in the beginning. For the first month it was the worst thing ever devised for man. Just run for a determined amount of time. But why? In the end I was glad I persevered through that first month. Jogging became fun and helped me lose alot of weight. The same could be said for a good book. The beginning is great and the end is amazing but to get there you have to read through the middle, boring section.
Those wise words have helped me stick with different things including this blog.
I guess the most relevant thing I can gather from this video is that in whatever thing you do, the best is yet to come.
