Gooooooooooooooal!

This summer something happened that only comes around every four years. The World Cup. I was at working at summer camp so I didn't get to watch every single game as I know some people did but I followed it as close as I could. It did not disappoint. The US Mens National Team won their division and made it to the final 16 only to be eliminated, for the second time in as many world cups, by Ghana.

It was still an amazing run. The US Men's team tied England, a feat noone could have predicted, tied Slovenia, and beat Algeria.

The night before the US played England I had a dream that we tied England. In the dream I ran around yelling and shouting when I heard the news. Surely it couldn't happen in real life! It did. My friend Josh was the one to break the news to me and, like in the dream, I shouted at/hugged/jumped around Josh at the same time!

The game vs Algeria was one of the best games ever for US soccer. If the US did not win they would not advance from their division. If they did win they would come in first. Former president Bill Clinton came to South Africa to cheer on the team. The stakes were high. For 90 minutes noone scored. Finally in the 91st minute Algeria flooded the US side and headed a shot towards the goal. Tim Howard, the goalie, grabbed the ball and fired the ball downfield to Landon Donovan. The US was off to the races! Donovan ran upfield passing the ball to Jozy Altidore. Altidore ran up the sidelines and crossed it to Clint Dempsey. Dempsey shoots! The goalie blocks it. The ball bounces out and into the foot of Landon Donovan! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!!

Thank you, Landon Donovan for making a grown man nearly cry.
